About Nigel Jay Cooper

unnamed
Nigel Jay Cooper

Bestselling JHP Fiction title of 2016 (Beat The Rain). Goodreads Choice Awards 2016 semifinalist, Best Debut Goodreads Author.*

Nigel is an author, writer, father, runner. Not always in that order.

Born in London, England, Nigel now lives in Brighton (via Nottingham) with his partner, their two children and greying ginger dog.

Beat The Rain is his first novel. It became his publisher’s *bestselling* title of 2016. It was also a Goodreads Choice Awards semifinalist 2016 for Best Debut Author.

He is CMO of advocate and influencer marketing agency Qube Media and has previously worked as a writer and editor for Channel 4 Television and as a newspaper sub-editor.

He’s a sometimes marathon runner and occasional actor and singer. Sometimes his brain switches off and lets him sleep, but not that often.

Nigel Jay Cooper
A love story about dysfunctional people. Can Louise move on from the loss of her lover Tom? Can she and Tom’s twin brother Adam really find a way to love one another? Or are they trapped on a path of self-destruction, moving towards a tragedy neither can avoid?

Beat The Rain is a moving and vulnerable depiction of a relationship in decline. At times humorous, at times heartbreaking, it explores what it means to live, to love and to lose.

My Q&A With Nigel

Describe yourself using three words?

Intense, manic, friendly

What inspired you to write your first novel?

I’ve always written, from a young age. It’s a compulsion, I guess. But life had taken over (work, family, ‘real life’) and when I turned 40 I decided I had to give it a go and finish a novel.

What time of day do you like to write?

Evenings mostly – but this is more due to constraints of having a day job and two young children rather than my preference.

What is your favourite book and why?

511yb28j36l
Margaret Atwood

Margaret Atwood, Life Before Man. I think she writes beautifully and I love the everydayness of this novel. Closely followed by Immortality by Milan Kundera.

How did you pick the title of your book?

I changed it at the last minute – it was going to be called Interested Others until late in the day – but I was running home trying to beat the rain one day and realised that phrase – beat the rain – perfectly summed up what my characters were trying (and failing) to do.

Are the characters in your book based on real people?

No, although people seem to think they are. I do draw from real life, but no specific character or action belongs to anyone real.

What’s your favourite word?

Chevron.

If you were a colour what would it be?

Light Green.

Do you plan your story beforehand or go with the flow?

I plan it, then I disregard everything I planned and write something else entirely as the story progresses 😀

Who is your favourite Author?

Margaret Atwood.

Are you working on a new project?

I’m at the editing stage of my second novel now and about to start my third.
