A Country Road, A Tree By Jo Baker ~ @Edbookfest #Review

download (1)

Jo Baker was this afternoons event for us at The Edinburgh International Festival 2017. Chaired by Alexandria Lawrie.

A Country Road, A Tree by Jo Baker is nominated for a James Tait Black Fiction 2017 award.

A fascinating insight into why Ms. Baker chose the theme of Samuel Beckett.  It turns out Ms Baker is a huge fangirl of Mr. Becketts work and the man himself.

The novel is set when Beckett returns to Paris to be with his partner and what happens when he joins the resistance. Ms. Baker said that she didn’t include Mr. Becketts name in the book as it hindered her writing process.

A very inciteful hour and not a book I would have thought to review but now one that I am very eager indeed to read.

Book Jacket

Paris, 1939: The pavement rumbles with the footfall of Nazi soldiers marching along the Champs Elysees. A young writer, recently arrived from Ireland to make his mark, smokes one last cigarette with his lover before the city they know is torn apart. Soon, he will put is own life and those of his loved ones in mortal danger by joining the Resistance…

Spies, artists, deprivation, danger and passion: this is a story of life at the edges of human experience, and of how one man came to translate it all into art.
