Sometimes, life needs a rewrite…

Author Grace Waterhouse has hit rock bottom. Her ex-husband has just had a baby with his new partner and her latest novel is… well, the less said the better.

Desperate for distraction, Grace impulsively takes on a friend’s cleaning job, parachuting herself into a new social circle including an eccentric OAP, a heartbroken twenty-something and one James Brooke, an enigmatic lawyer with an unblinking stare.

Add to this mix an anxious literary agent, a hairdresser who doesn’t mince words and a newly repentant ex-husband, and Grace’s career break proves to be more breathless than breather.

They say that all you need is love – but what if that’s the one thing you haven’t got?

Quirky Facts with Jo Platt

Author Jo Platt shares with us some quirky background facts about her three novels: Reading Upside Down, It Was You and You Are Loved.

– In Reading Upside Down there is a character who frequently appears but never utters a word.

– There are three characters mentioned in You Are Loved who also appear, or are mentioned, in Reading Upside Down.  I’d be amazed if anyone spotted all three.

– The names of every member of my book group (fifteen of them at the time) appear in Reading Upside Down.

– And the Short Book Group in It Was You is named after my book group and, yes, we do read only books of 250 pages or fewer.

– As in Reading Upside Down, my friend really did use a syringe from the vet to inject vodka into tomatoes, and my father really does like to climb scaffolding and did want to construct a solar heating system out of our old greenhouse.  Sigh.

– The working title for It Was You was Hidden Narratives, a reference not only to the secrets kept by the various characters but also to the fact that each of the books read by The Short Book Group to some extent reflects the narrative of the novel.

– My student job was as a cleaner in a psychiatric hospital.  During my first summer at the hospital, I was paired with an older, very experienced cleaner named Rose, who took me under her wing. Grace’s cleaner in You Are Loved is named after her.
