Book Synopsis

Fledgling nurse Sorcha Alden knew she had the skills to save lives, but she never dreamed that her own life would be the one in danger.

Driven by tragedy to honor her family name, Sorcha embarks on a journey that takes her from the bleak but familiar streets of New York, through the sultry and seductive city of New Orleans, and into the brutal jungles of Nepal. Forging friendships and carrying on her mother’s mission of healing was her dream. Plunging into a love affair with the mysterious Dr. Ashayle could have been a fairytale.

Being murdered and waking up as a blood-thirsty monster—became her living nightmare.

Torn away form a life that had just begun, Sorcha returns to New Orleans as a newborn vampire, forced to start over in a cutthroat underworld of devilry and decadence. Complicated politics, bitter rivals and jealous ancestors stand between her and the promises she’s still determined to keep.

In a realm where the boundary between good and evil is as murky as the Mississippi River and immortal does not mean invincible, will Sorcha ever risk her shattered heart and love again? Can the magical harmony of the Crescent City give her enough courage to fulfill her eternal destiny?

Anne Marie Andrus

AM (1)

Anne Marie has been an equestrienne, chorale singer, candy-striper, EMT, and baseball fan. Roaming the back roads of New Jersey with her family, she found great respect for antiques, historical locations and the stories they hold. Her current list of favorite pastimes include coffee, bourbon, and Les Miserables–which requires more bourbon. She has been known to attend sporting events just for the flyover. The boat she and her husband christened Glory Days, is her escape from the chaos of everyday life.

The inspiration for Anne Marie’s debut novel, Monsters & Angels, is her fascination with vampires and her passion for everything New Orleans. When she isn’t writing, she can be found working nights with the critical care team in a busy trauma center.

Review ~Monsters & Angels

What a perfect book to pick up right before Halloween! Set in the 1930s the protagonist of this mixed genre book, Sorcha Alden, travels from New York City to the city of New Orleans, to Nepal and back finding out who she truly is along the way. I am a huge fan of the up and coming New Adult genre; as a romance author obviously I am a fan of romance novels; I have already stated how much I love historical novels, but vampires….. not so much. However, Anne Marie Andrus might have been able to do what I never thought possible – she made vampires desirable and well, loveable. This is no light-hearted tale by any means. It has its share of both sex and violence. But both are written in ways that are not overly upsetting to even the queasiest of readers (that would be me). Ms. Andrus also touches on a variety of sensitive and very modern topics that are sure to get the reader to think.

The blue cover captures the essence of the novel as much of the action happens at night (obviously) in the beautiful city of New Orleans. Ms. Andrus does a wonderful job describing all of her settings and making the reader feel like they are actually there. What I liked the most about this novel, however, were the characters. I could connect with all of them and I found myself cringing and hoping for them. I know who I would have picked for Sorcha!

I loved the way that Ms. Andrus used the term “heart beat” throughout the novel. I felt there were some truly well placed literary techniques added. If I had any disappointments, I think it would be that I actually wanted this novel to be a little longer. It is listed at 442 pages but there were times when I felt Ms. Andrus rushed through parts. A younger audience might be used to this type of quick movement from scene to scene, and it truly did not detract from the book. I just would have liked to have some more details at times. Without giving anything away, the Amazon UK summary adds, “Sorcha’s final word will make your jaw drop!” It did indeed (Think of the movie Inception if you will) and set the reader up for either a sequel or to tease their imagination.  Again, I’d have preferred to read another twenty pages or so to tie up some loose ends, but that’s just me. Other than this, Monsters and Angels is a book that sucked me in and kept me turning the pages. And it didn’t give me nightmares for which I am grateful!
